ISO 50001

ISO 50001

Using energy efficiently helps you cut costs, save money, as well as helping to conserve resources and tackle climate change through carbon emission reductions. ISO 50001 supports organisations in all sectors to use energy more efficiently, through the proactive development of an energy management system (EnMS).

ISO 50001 is based on the management system model of continual improvement also used for ISO 14001, which makes it easier for you to integrate energy management into your overall efforts to improve environmental management.

ISO 50001 provides a framework for you to identify where and when energy is being used in your organisation, in order to effectively target your improvement efforts and cut costs. Typically businesses save 10% through a better understanding of their energy use.

If you are a large organisation that has to comply with the Energy Saving Opportunities Scheme (ESOS), ISO 50001 is an established route to compliance with these regulations.  Likewise, if you need to report your energy use and carbon emissions as part of Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) requirements, an Energy Management System provides you with a framework to collect, monitor, analyse and evaluate the relevant data, making the SECR process much more straight-forward.

We can help you assess the benefits of an Energy Management System for your organisation, whether ISO50001 is right for you and help you identify the potential energy savings.

Changes to ISO 50001

In August 2018, a new version of ISO 50001 was released, restructuring the Clauses to align the Standard to the High Level Structure used by ISO 14001, 9001 and the new 45001. Companies now have until 31 January 2022 to transition their certified Energy Management Systems (EnMS) to the new Standard, (original transition date was 19 August 2021, which has been extended by six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

We are already helping our clients understand the new Standard, which includes new clauses and improved explanations for some requirements. Get in touch today and we can help you understand how these requirements apply to your EnMS and plan your transition.

How does ISO 50001 fit with ISO 14001?

ISO 50001 focuses on energy performance improvement, whilst ISO 14001 addresses all the significant environmental impacts of an organisation. Both Standards can be implemented individually or they can be integrated with each other or any other ISO management standard, for example ISO 9001 (Quality) and ISO 45001 (Health and Safety).

If energy is your organisation’s most significant environmental impact and you are spending more than £200,000 per year on energy, then ISO 50001 might be a more appropriate Standard. Research by certification bodies identified that if a company is spending more than £200,000 per year on energy then payback on investment in ISO 50001 is likely to be less than 1 year, with savings accruing year on year.

We can help you assess the benefits of an Energy Management System for your organisation, whether ISO50001 is right for you and help you identify the potential energy savings. This is particularly important if you are obligated under ESOS, we can help you determine whether an ESOS Audit or an ISO 50001 system is the most effective route to compliance.
